For many of us on campus, it feels like we're in hold mode. Charge letters from early September have gone out, and those responsible for drafting recommendations are in the process of doing so. But for those who sit and wait, unsure of what might happen as a result of those recommendations, it can be a time of anxiety.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Kim A. Wilcox is the chief academic officer for Michigan State University. In this capacity, he provides leadership for matters that affect academic programs, research, and outreach involving faculty, students, and staff. The Provost oversees the quality of programs of instruction and research through collaborative work with deans, departmental chairs, and other Vice Presidents, addressing issues such as effective planning, good management, and program reviews. Additionally, the Provost is responsible for overseeing academic and budgetary planning and priorities.

The Provost helps ensure the quality of the faculty by administering and monitoring procedures and criteria for faculty appointments and promotions, working conditions, and tenure. He also works to ensure the quality of student learning by overseeing the curriculum and encouraging and coordinating initiatives in undergraduate education. In addition, the Provost coordinates recruiting and admissions for undergraduate and graduate programs.
